Boswellin is a standardized powdered extract from the Gum resin exudates of Boswellia serrata tree, commonly known as FRANKINCENSE.  It contains 4 identified triterpenoid B-Boswellic acids. The four major identified pentacyclic triterpenoids in Boswellin are B-Boswellic acid, Acetyl-B-Boswellic acid, 11-keto-B-Boswellic acid and Acetyl-11-keto-B-Boswellic acid (AKBBA).

Traditional Knowledge

Frankincense, also known as olibanum, has a long history of use for example, in religious ceremonies and for its medicinal properties that have been appreciated for millennia in China and India.  Furthermore, frankincense has traditionally been used medicinally as a remedy for a wide variety of afflictions and ailments, including infections, ulcers, nausea and fever. In India, the gum resin exudates of Boswellia serrata has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine in the management of several inflammatory conditions.  A study documented with the NIH foundbioactivity of frankincense essential oil significantly overlapped with many canonical pathways signaling pathways that are closely related to thebiological processes of inflammation, immune response, and tissue remodeling in human cells.

Mechanism of Action

Boswellic acids have been shown to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes from arachidonic acid.  In addition to this mechanism, boswellic acids also decrease the activity of the enzyme, Human Leukocyte Elastase (HLE). This dual action is unique to boswellic acids.

Nutraceutical Application

Boswellin with its high AKBBA content, finds potential use in management of various inflammatory disorders and healthy joint support.

Management of Arthritis

Boswellin has anti-inflammatory action much like conventional non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  Additionally, long term usage of Boswellia does not lead to irritation or ulceration of the stomach, therefore safer than NSAIDS.

Management of Respiratory Disorders

Leukotrienes have a major role in the effects related to asthma, allergies and inflammation.  Hence inhibition of 5-Lipoxygenase enzyme is most important in management of asthma. In a double blind placebo controlled study, 70% of the patients treated with Boswellia serrata improved in comparison to control including disappearance of physical symptoms decrease eosinophilic count and improvement of respiratory rate.

Gupta, l. et al.  (1998) Eur. J. Med Res.  3(11):511-514)

Management of Ulcerative colitis

Patients suffering from ulcerative colitis were treated with Boswellia serrata extract (350 mg x 3 times; n=34) and Sulfasalazine (1g x 3 times; n=8) for 6 weeks.  The author observed that 82% of the patients treated with Boswellia extract showed improvement.

Curcumin is obtained from the dried rhizomes of Curcuma longa (Turmeric) and standardized for minimum 95% Curcuminoids.

There are three main chemical compounds - Curcumin, Demethoxycurcumin (DMC) and Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) - collectively known as Curcuminoids.

The rhizome of turmeric (Cucuma longa L.) has a rich history in India as a spice, food preservative and has been used for centuries in the Ayurvedic system of medicine.  In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is well-documented for treatment of various respiratory conditions (ie, asthma, bronchial hyperactivity, and various allergies), liver disorders, poor appetite, rheumatism, and influenza symptoms.

At a molecular level, the curcuminoids have been shown to inhibit nuclear factor kappaB (NFkB) a transcription factor that triggers inflammatory mediators.  NFkB is implicated in a variety of chronic disease conditions ranging from cardiovascular diseases to cancer. Curcuminoids offer antioxidant support, anti inflammatory support, supports a healthy immune system and potentially prevent connective tissue break down through inhibiting destructive enzymes, with benefits to healthy aging (Aggarwal B. et al. (2006). Turmeric: The Genus Curcuma.  Pp 297-368).

Hello Heath’s curcumin uses the only curcumin in the market that:

  1.  Has been reviewed and acknowledged by US FDA for GRAS status, a process which includes a comprehensive review of safety and toxicology data.
  2. Holds patents covering composition of curcuminoids, method of manufacture and uses.
  3. Consistently has the same composition of the three curcuminoids in the same ratio in every batch.
  4. Proven bioavailability

Anti-inflammatory: Fighting Inflammation

Most degenerative diseases are driven by chronic subclinical inflammation.  The old view of the inflammation is that it represents the healing process. This is true to a certain extent; however when the inflammation becomes chronic, it becomes a disease.

Today, the study of inflammation has gone from the tissue levels deeper into the nuclear level.  Cell-signaling molecules have been identified which stimulate the gene that induces the expression of the COX enzyme which in turn induce inflammation.

“NF-kB: The master regulator of Inflammation”

Nuclear Factor - Kappa B (NF-kappa B), as the ‘master switch’, is the primary means by which inflammation is ‘adjusted’.

In the normal state,

  • NF-kB resides in the cytoplasm of the cell and is bound to its inhibitor -IkB (Inhibitor of k-B.)
  • Injuries and inflammatory stimuli, such as free radicals, release NF-kB from its inhibitor-IkB
  • The free NF-kB, now moves into the nucleus and activates the genes responsible for expressing cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).
  • This leads to inflammation

NF-kB activation is a major mediator of inflammation in most diseases and inhibition of NF-kB can help prevent/delay the onset of the disease.  Curcuminoids' natural compounds derived from turmeric roots, inhibit NF-kB.

Inflammation plays a major role in development of most diseases.

Curcuminoids act by inhibiting several processes that contribute to the survival, proliferation, invasion and metastasis of tumor cells (Kuttan G. et al. (2007) Adv Exp Med Biol, 595: 173-84).

Curcuminoids act by interfering with signaling mechanisms (critical for tumor growth), regulation of apoptosis (cell death), and tumor angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation which feeds tumors).

Phase I clinical trials have shown that curcuminoids are safe at doses up to 8 g/day (Cheng AL. et al. (2001). Anticancer Res. 2895-900).

Alzheimer’s Study:

A group of researchers from UCLA treated macrophages of six Alzheimer disease (AD) patients with curcuminoids in vitro and measured anti-amyloid B (AB) uptake using fluorescence and confocal microscopy.  After treatment AB uptake by macrophages of three of the six AD patients was significantly increased. Confocal microscopy of AD macrophages responsive to curcuminoids showed surface binding in untreated macrophages but co-localization with phalloidin in an intracellular compartment after treatment (Zhang L. et al. (2006). J. Alzheimers Dis. 10(1): 1-7).

Sharp PhosphatidylSerine (PS) is a naturally occurring phospholipid that is consumed as part of a normal diet.  Clinical studies indicate that supplemental Phosphatidylserine may be beneficial for memory loss conditions, cognitive performance, improving mood and learning disabilities.

Hello Health’s soy-free PhosphatidylSerine is a novel, all-natural source of Phosphatidylserine produced from sunflower lecithin from sunflowers that are grown on controlled farms in Europe and have a lower impact on the environment.  Unlike traditional soy-based phosphatidylserine, it is soy-free and allergen-free, making it an excellent option for those seeking allergen-free and non-GMO.

People can boost their intake of phosphatidylserine though food—it's available in a number of foods, including soy (which is the main source), white beans, egg yolks, chicken liver, and beef liver.  However, the modern diet has changed making it hard to get PS naturally due to more processed foods, lower good fats, fewer meats and a faster more urban life.

In over 30 clinical studies studied over whole populations in memory and cognitive decline found that cognitive abilities (e.g. memory, learning, and attention) and brain functioning related parameters increased with 100 mg/day. (Published in Chinese in: Tang Yong et al, Chongqing medical journal).  Additionally, PS is the only cognitive supplement with FDA health claims.

Hello Health uses Sharp PS which has been clinically proven to:

  • Improve memory, mood and learning
  • Slow the effects of aging on memory
  • Improve exercise experience
  • Improved recovery
  • Reduced muscle soreness

Cinnamon can aid in eliminating bacterial and viral infections. From some studies, it was noted that cinnamon oil has antimicrobial properties. Cinnamon is also used to soothe respiratory illnesses such as colds, sinusitis, and sore throats, as well as it helps to relieve muscular aches and pains. It has also been used for weight loss, and it keeps blood sugar levels balanced, prevents sugar cravings, mood swings and fatigue. In addition to fighting bacterial and viral infections, it is also known to fight parasites plus relieve depression and anxiety.  Also, cinnamon works when it comes to gut health. Cinnamon contains calcium and fiber that are the essential components for the functioning of the colon. The colon pulls out waste. This supports detoxification, good digestive health and it also helps in preventing issues like constipation and diarrhea.

The liver produces bile that aids enzymes to filter and detoxify the blood. Dandelion can help in detoxification. It contains essential vitamins and nutrients that assist in cleansing the liver to work optimally.

Moreover, according to some studies, it was noted that its extract reduced the ability of viruses to grow. Also, dandelion has antiviral as well as antimicrobial properties that help in supporting to fight against infection. It was found that a therapeutic level of dandelion extract causes no harm to the infected cells, but interferes with the viral RNA production.

From research published in PLOS Pathogens, it was noted that mice whose immune system was zinc deficient succumbed to infection up to 3 times faster. That means zinc can help in killing the bacteria. Also, in a study by Daren Knoell (a professor at Ohio State University), he states that zinc helps in balancing the response of the immune system by fighting infections.

It is a kind of miracle extract that comes from the leaves of the olive tree. It is known to offer a range of health benefits like treating diarrhea, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, shingles, urinary tract infections, etc. According to research, olive leaf extract contains oleuropein that has antibacterial, immune-stimulating, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. It lowers cholesterol, reduces high blood pressure and has many other properties.
